A Serra do Açor foi atravessada pelos fogos de Outubro de 2017 e este fim-de-semana prolongado será dedicado ao conhecimento da mata autóctone da Serra do Açor e ao voluntariado para ajudar à sua recuperação. Apesar de ter ardido, no último dia iremos visitar a Mata da Margaraça e a Fraga da Pena, sítios classificados da Área de Paisagem Protegida da Serra do Açor, para conhecer uma das mais bem preservadas áreas de vegetação natural da serra. Nos primeiros dois dias, iremos conhecer a aldeia de Xisto de Monte Redondo e colaborar como voluntários com a Comissão de Melhoramentos de Monte Redondo nos trabalhos pós-fogo no Baldio de Monte Redondo. O Baldio de Monte Redondo, com cerca de 50 hectares, fica a poucos quilómetros da Mata da Margaraça e esta sua proximidade reforça a importância de recuperar a sua vegetação.

2. Observar o impacto do fogo na floresta, compreender a dinâmica pós-fogo da vegetação e o tipo de intervenção a fazer no Outono/Inverno;
3. Apoiar e encorajar com o nosso trabalho voluntário os esforços da Comissão de Melhoramentos de Monte Redondo na recuperação da vegetação do Baldio de Monte Redondo e na reabilitação de algumas infra-estruturas danificadas da própria aldeia.

De acordo com Jorge Neves, da Comissão de Melhoramentos de Monte Redondo, entidade responsável pela gestão do Baldio de Monte Redondo:
«Monte Redondo é uma aldeia do concelho de Arganil, na Serra do Açor, implantada no topo de uma colina, a 550/600 m de altitude, de onde é possível avistar um belo horizonte, de que se destaca uma extensa parte do planalto beirão e as serras do Caramulo e do Buçaco. Como muitas outras aldeias na região, tem vindo a perder progressivamente população e a aumentar a extensão das áreas sem cultivo ou manutenção e no passado mês de outubro foi fustigada por dois incêndios, a 9 e 16 de Outubro, o último dos quais percorreu a quase totalidade da área do baldio e chegou, por vários lados, até à povoação.»
O trabalho a fazer no baldio passará por cuidar do solo, fragilizado e exposto pelo fogo. Vamos limpar e marcar caminhos, usar material lenhoso para ajudar à prevenção da erosão e eventualmente cortar exemplares de espécies infestantes ou que estejam em competição directa com árvores a preservar, deixando a touça no solo para que as raízes, vivas ou mortas, ajudem a segurá-lo. Só a Primavera irá mostrar que plantas sobreviveram e só depois se poderá pensar na melhor forma de recuperar a vegetação. Não se trata, por isso, de uma acção de plantação, porque não é ainda o momento próprio. É importante terem uma visão realista dos trabalhos e do impacto visual dos terrenos queimados. Mas, apesar de camuflada, a vida está lá e o nosso trabalho será dar-lhe as melhores condições para que se manifeste na Primavera com pujança.
O trabalho na aldeia passará por ajudar à limpeza e recuperação de uma fonte e tanque e ajudar a retirar parte de um muro que colapsou e ocupa o caminho.
O plano exacto de actividades está ainda a ser definido, mas para que não ocupem estes dias com outros compromissos fica aqui a primeira chamada!
Programa (muito) provisório (a opinião de todos para ajudar à sua finalização é bem vinda):
8 de Dezembro 2017:
- Saída para Monte Redondo dos diversos pontos de origem;
- 11h00 chegada a Monte Redondo, distribuição pelos alojamentos/montagem de tendas (para os que ficam na aldeia);
- 12h00 almoço livre/partilhado
- 13h30 visita à aldeia e ao baldio de Monte Redondo, caracterização do mesmo, sua história e floresta, o impacto do fogo e identificação dos trabalhos a realizar;
- 14h30 primeira sessão de voluntariado no baldio;
- 16h30 início da caminhada de regresso a Monte Redondo; regresso ao alojamento;
- 18h00 preparativos para jantar partilhado/livre
- 19h00 jantar partilhado/livre com troca de ideias sobre o futuro do baldio e convívio
9 de Dezembro 2017:
- 9h30 Ida para o Baldio para a segunda sessão de voluntariado, com almoço no campo
- 16h30 Início do regresso a Monte Redondo
- 18h00 preparativos para jantar partilhado/livre
- 19h00 jantar partilhado/livre e convívio
10 de Dezembro 2017:
- 10h00 Visita à Mata da Margaraça e Fraga da Pena
- 13h00 Almoço de Despedida (a decidir, mas a Fraga da Pena tem um parque de merendas lindíssimo onde, se o tempo o permitir, se faz um excelente pic-nic)
- 15h00 Despedida
O deslocamento será à base de boleias partilhadas (com divisão de despesas), permitindo que vão pessoas de vários locais. Tentar-se-á fazer uma coordenação de boleias.
Está a ser feito um levantamento de ofertas de estadia em casas da aldeia, em colaboração com as pessoas da aldeia. Estamos a ponderar o valor de oferta de uma quantia simbólica por pessoa/noite. Haverá ainda a possibilidade de acampar. Quem escolher estas opções poderá contar connosco para coordenar as dormidas.
Há ainda a opção de ficar em casas de turismo de habitação e rural, além de unidades hoteleiras, não muito longe (Arganil é logo ali ao lado), para quem prefira (a responsabilidade pela escolha, marcação e pagamento, nesta última opção, será de cada um, podemos ajudar com informação sobre distância à aldeia, etc.).
A ideia é que se possa ir fazer o voluntariado gastando apenas o que cada um pode/quer gastar. A participação é livre e pode ser feita nos dias/horas que entenderem. Mas pedimos que nos informem da vossa intenção de ir, para organizarmos a logística de ferramentas de trabalho, etc., da melhor forma possível

The Serra do Açor, in the centre of Portugal, was crossed by the fires of October 2017 and this long weekend will be dedicated to the knowledge of the native forest of the Serra do Açor and to volunteering to help its recovery. Despite having been affected by the fire, on the last day we will visit the Margaraça Wood and Fraga da Pena, classified sites of the Protected Landscape Area of the Serra do Açor, to get to know one of the best preserved areas of natural vegetation of the mountain range. In the first two days, we will visit the village of Monte Redondo and collaborate as volunteers with the Commission of Improvements of Monte Redondo in the post-fire works in the Baldio de Monte Redondo. The Baldio de Monte Redondo, with about 50 hectares, is just a stone throw away from the Margaraça Forest and its proximity reinforces its significance and the how important the work of recovering its vegetation is.
Objectives:
1. To get to know the reality of the native and industrial forest in Serra do Açor, getting familiarised with the main forest species; we will visit to the Mata da Margaraça (native wood example) and Baldio de Monte Redondo (mosaic of native forest and extraction);
2. Observe the impact of fire on the forest, understand the post-fire dynamics of vegetation and the type of intervention to be done in autumn / winter;
3. To contribute with volunteer work for the recovery of the village of Monte Redondo and the vegetation of the Baldio de Monte Redondo (Commons of Monte Redondo), supporting and encouraging with our effort the Commission of Improvements of Monte Redondo.
The work to be done in the Commons will involve taking care of the soil, weakened and exposed by fire. We will be clearing and marking footpaths, and we will use woody material to help prevent erosion. We will eventually cut down some invader species, taking care, at the moment, to leave the stump and roots in the ground so that the roots, dead or alive, help to prevent erosion. Only Spring will show which plants have survived and only then can we think of the best way to recover the vegetation. It is not, therefore, a plantation action, because it is not yet the proper moment. It is important to have a realistic view of the work and the visual impact of the burned areas. But although it is camouflaged, life is there and our job will be to give it the best conditions so that it manifests itself in spring with strength.
In the village, we will help to recover a fountain and help clear a path of a collapsed wall, for example.
The exact plan of activities is still being defined, but in order for you not to occupy these days with other commitments, the first call is here!

December 8, 2017:
- Departure to Monte Redondo from the various points of origin;
- 11h00 arrival to Monte Redondo, distribution of lodgings / assembly of tents (for those who stay in the village);
- 12h00 free / shared lunch
- 1:30 pm visit to the village and Baldio of Monte Redondo, characterization of the village, its history and forest, the impact of the fire and identification of the work to be done;
- 14h30 first session of volunteering in the Baldio;
- 4:30 pm start of the walk back to Monte Redondo; return to accommodation;
- 6:00 pm Preparations for shared dining / free
- 7:00 pm shared / free dinner with discussion and exchange of ideas about the future of the waste and joyfull conviviality.
December 9, 2017:
- 9:30 am Departure to the Baldio for the second volunteer session, with lunch in the field
- 4:30 pm Start of the return to Monte Redondo
- 6:00 pm Preparations for shared dining / free
- 7:00 pm shared / free dinner and socializing
December 10, 2017:
- 10h00 Visit to the Mata da Margaraça and Fraga da Pena
- 13h00 Farewell Lunch (to be decided, but the Fraga da Pena has a beautiful picnic park where, weather permiting we might have lunch there)
- 3:00 pm Farewell
The displacement will be based on shared rides (with division of expenses), allowing people from various locations to make their way to the village. We will do our best to coordinate the ride sharing.
A survey of housing offers is being done in village houses in collaboration with village people. We are considering the offer of a symbolic amount per person / night. There is also the possibility of camping. Those who choose these options can count on us to coordinate overnight stays.
There is also the option of staying in local tourism houses, as well as hotels, not far away (Arganil is right next door), for those who prefer (the responsibility for the choice, booking and payment, in the latter option, will be of each one, we can help with information about distance to the village, etc.).
The idea is that one can go volunteering and spend only what each one can / wants to spend. Participation is free and can be done on any day/time. But we ask you to inform us of your intention to go, to organize the logistics of work tools, etc., in the best possible way.
